This is pretty meta, but since I'm building a platform for people to share their design process, I thought i would share updates to the Build in Progress website in its own project. The most recent addition to Build in Progress is notifications, where you'll be able to see when people comment on, favorite, and remix your projects!  When you sign in, you should see the notification icon in the top right next to your username.  There, you'll see some of your most recent notifications.  

If you click "View All," you'll go to the notifications page, which has two tabs.  The first tab shows activities on your project as well as any comments people have left on projects you've commented on.  The second tab shows only notifications on your own projects.

I added some pages you can access if you run into problems.

The new help page has some animated gifs (pronounced "jif"!) that explain how to create branches and remixes.

You can now embed video from Youtube and Vimeo into your project!  To do so, you only need to enter the URL for the video (note: you no longer need to paste the entire embed code; just the URL).  

There is also a new feature to add other media.  For now, we're starting with embedding Soundcloud files.  To embed a Soundcloud file, click the "Add Other Media" button when you're creating a step, and enter the URL of your Soundcloud file.  The Soundcloud player will then be embedded in your project!  Check out the one I've added, which is just an example for fun. (=  Also notice that you can tell which files have Soundclouds based on the audio icon over the image.

Any chance you'd consider embedding gists (code snippets) from Github.com? Or maybe renderings of 3D models from Sketchfab.com?

hey thanks for the suggestion! I should actually update this post since the soundcloud embedding has since been removed.

I've gotten requests before to embed code snippets, so I'll look into that. 3D models sounds cool too. ( :

We now have Collections on the site!  Collections are a way to group projects by a theme.  For example, I created a Collection for littleBits projects to highlight some of the Build in Progress projects we created during a littleBits workshop last month.  You can check out the collection here:


To create a collection, click on your username in the navigation bar at the top of the screen, and you'll see two new links: Create Project and Create Collection.  You can add projects to your collection by adding the Project URL on the collection page.  Anyone can add projects to a collection, but only the owner of the collection can remove projects.  You can check out Collections by visiting the Collections section of the Explore page and viewing Collections on user profiles.

We’re excited to announce our first ever Challenge on Build in Progress!  

We’re keeping the name of the Challenge a surprise until the official launch on December 1st, so be sure to come to the site then to find out what the theme is!

With the challenge, makers from around the world will be building and sharing projects inspired by the theme.  It’s an opportunity to introduce yourself to the Build in Progress community, get feedback on your designs, and check out cool projects that other people are building!  

The challenge will be officially open from December 1st to December 15th. You don’t need to sign up for the challenge in advance; just submit your project on the Challenge Collection when it’s launched on December 1st.

We hope you’ll be able to join us, and we can’t wait to see what awesome projects you create!

The first Build in Progress challenge theme is .... *drumroll* ....

Build Your Name!  

Introduce yourself by creating a project that incorporates your name.  You can create an interactive nametag to hang on your door, a stop animation using the letters of your name, a cake with your initials...it’s all up to you!  

To participate, create a project and add it to the Build Your Name Challenge collection here:

You’ll find some sample projects there created by some of us here at MIT!

A great place to start is sharing a sketch of what you plan to build.  Please share a sketch by Sunday, Dec. 8th so we can check in with how everyone is doing!

We’re also introducing two new features that may be helpful as you share your project:

  • Ask for Advice - You can now ask for advice from others about your project.  When you create or edit a step, you can ask a question by filling out the “Ask for Advice” section.  Be sure to mark the question as “answered” once you’ve decided what to do!  To respond to any question, leave a comment on the step.

  • Uploading video files - You can now upload videos directly to your project (without having to put it on Youtube or Vimeo).  When you add a video, you’ll see two tabs: Embed Video and Upload Video.  You can upload a video file that's under 50MB.

Our first Build in Progress challenge comes to a close on December 15th.  That means if you're still working on your project, you have a week to finish it! 

As you're updating your Build in Progress project, remember to add a description of your project.  What does it do, and what inspired you to make it?  If it moves, try adding a video to share how it works!

If you want any advice on your project, leave a question on a step so others know you're looking for feedback.

The Build Your Name Challenge officially ends today, Sunday December 15th.  Congrats to all participants who shared their projects!  Here are some things you can do as we wrap up the challenge:

  • Add a project overview - If you haven't added a description to your project overview, try adding one.  Let us know what gave you the idea to create your project!
  • Check out your comments - You may find some comments on your project that you can respond to.
  • Leave a comment - If you find a project you like, let the person know by leaving a comment on their project.
  • Remix a project - Inspired by something you found?  Try remixing it and creating your own version.

We're excited to announce a new social feature to the site: following users!  

If you go to any profile page, you can now click "follow" to get updates about what that person is creating and doing on Build in Progress.

Our new homepage includes an "Activity Feed" where you can see all the latest activity from the users you're following.

We're also highlighting featured projects right at the top of the homepage with our new slideshow.

We're trying out a bunch of new changes to Build in Progress today.  You'll now find a completely redesigned project page that includes the following new features:

  • Full screen process map: You can now view your "process map" in full screen by minimizing the step descriptions on the right.  This makes it a lot easier to view long projects!
  • Project banner: The project banner at the top of the page now includes a description of your project (the "project overview") and a slideshow of images from your project.  
  • New add step interface: When you add a new step to your project, it automatically gets added after the last step you created.  To rearrange it, you can click and drag the New Step block in the process map when you're editing the step information.

You can now add collaborators to any project!  To do so, go to a project page and click the "collaborators" button (located in the byline of the project).  From there, you'll be able to search for any users on the site and add collaborators by username.  All collaborators are able to edit the project directly.

We're launching two new features today: project categories and design files!

Project Categories

We’re working on a way for you to easily search through existing projects, and the first step towards that is a new category system.  You can select multiple categories for a project by clicking the “Edit Project Categories” link at the top of the page.  The categories of projects you’ve built show up on your profile as well!  

On the project page, you can now also filter projects by categories.  The more you categorize your projects, the easier it’ll be for other people to find them.

Uploading Design Files

You can now share digital design files (such as CAD files, Arduino or Processing sketches, or laser cutter files) with any of the steps of your project.  This can be be helpful for others following or remixing your project, and can just be helpful for you to organize your files.  You can upload any file that is less than 10 MB in size.

We wanted to make questions more visible on the site, so now you’ll see recently asked questions directly on the homepage.

You’ll also see a list of Build in Progress news, where we’ll be sharing new features and challenges.  We plan to share more of the behind-the-scenes process of developing these features on our project pages, so check them out if you want to learn more!

The Computer Clubhouse is a network of drop-in design centers around the world where youth can work on creative design projects using technology.  They have a website called the Computer Clubhouse Village where members of the clubhouses can share their projects. 

I've been working with the lead developer for the Village to make it easier for members to use Build in Progress and have their projects automatically shared to the Village.  I'll put all updates concerning Village Integration in this branch!

If you are a member of the Computer Clubhouse Village, you can now log in directly to Build in Progress without creating a separate account!  Your updates to Build in Progress will also be shared directly to the Village so you don’t have to double post.

(NOTE: if you are a member of the Village and would like to use the Android app, you will need to create a Build in Progress password.  You can do this under Account Settings)

If you're a member of the Computer Clubhouse Village and create a project with other members of the Village, your project page on the village will automatically include multiple project authors.  This will make it easier to update your Village project pages directly through Build in Progress.

One of the biggest feature requests I’ve gotten on Build in Progress is the ability to annotate the Process Map (that tree that appears on the left side of your project pages).  I’m happy to announce that creating Branch Labels is the latest addition to the project page!

Branch labels can be used to help organize and title your branches.  For example, if you have branches representing different versions of your design or different step categories (such as project planning, electronics, or mechanical design), use the Branch Labels to let people know what types of things they can find in each branch.  

You can also pick different colors to indicate different parts of your process.  For example, if something doesn’t work, you can label “dead-ends” in your design with a red label!  

You can check out how Branch labels are used in this very project to organize the different parts of the website that are under development!

When projects have a lot of steps, it's helpful to view more of the process map (or the tree on the left part of the project page).  Now when your expand your browser window full screen, the process map should enlarge so that you can view more of your project. 

Remember, you can always minimize the blog (or right part of the project page) by clicking the grey tab.  This will enable you to view the process map full screen.

Originally, I designed comments so that you couldn't have multiple paragraphs; this was in an effort to reduce the amount of space comments would take up on the page.  However, since making this decision, I have gotten request for paragraphed commenting and have run into many occasions where I wish I could leave a paragraphed comment.  It turns out that implementing paragraph comments was really easy, so I decided to launch it and try it out!

Now you can receive email updates when there’s activity on any of your projects!  By default, email notifications will be turned on for all users, but if you’d like to opt-out, you can change your email notification settings under your account settings.  

You will now receive email notifications when the following events happen:

  • someone comments on your project
  • your project gets featured
  • someone remixes your project
  • someone adds you as a collaborator on a project
  • someone favorites your project
  • your project gets added to a collection
  • someone adds a project to your collection
  • someone follows me

I think would be cool if you would also get an email for when someone comments on one of your comments! That way you can continue a conversation that might be happening in the comments section.

Thanks for the suggestion!

With the current email notification system, you will get a comment if anyone comments on your own project. I've refrained from having emails sent when comments are left on projects that aren't your own because there aren't threaded comments, and I wouldn't want you to get emails from comments that aren't necessarily related to the comment you left.

In the future, though, I may add a feature that lets you mute email notifications from a particular project so you can more easily chose which projects you want to get emailed about.

Ah i see your reasoning now, though I feel like for the most part, it would be comments related the either past comments or the project itself, but I do understand the concern of unhelpful comments.

This is a step where I talk about back-end details – while you may not see this visibly on the site (and hopefully you don't!), it's something that I still feel is worth documenting since a lot of work went into it!

A few weeks ago, someone brought up to me that their image was rotated incorrectly when uploaded to Build in Progress.  I decided to look into this more as it was an issue we faced with uploading images through the Android app.  Sure enough, it was a similar issue with EXIF tags.  

What I've gathered from looking up information about EXIF tags is that they specify the rotation of the image without actually rotating the file itself.  To resolve the issue, though, it wasn't enough to just read the EXIF tag and rotate the saved image.  The problem was compounded by the fact that image uploading on BiP happens in two steps.  First, the image gets uploaded directly to Amazon S3, which is a fairly quick process.  Then, the image gets processed and sized into many different versions (thumbnails, preview sizes, etc.).  

Since creating different versions of the images takes time, when you upload an image, the image you see is actually the one uploaded directly to Amazon S3 (if you inspect the image, you'll see it looks something like .../uploads/...).  This is in comparison to other images that you uploaded previously, which will have a path that looks something like .../image_path/....So when you first upload an image, the image you immediately see is being versioned in the background so you don't have to wait for that to happen.

I was able to easily fix the issue with saving the actual file and rotating it properly given the EXIF tag.  But the directly uploaded image was bit tricker.  What I ended up doing is actually rotating the image using css transforms on the page right after you've uploaded the image.  Visually, it should look pretty similar to the final uploaded image, but if you inspect the element, you'll see that a transformation has actually been applied (see image).  This is only temporary, as the project pages fetch the actual versioned image after the image processing is fully complete.

Anyway, just thought I would share this change that took me a weekend to implement.  Hopefully there will not be as many issues with rotated images from now on!

Previously, if you were editing or creating a new step, you could only rearrange that single step in your process map, and the page would refresh each time.

I've updated the step rearranging interface so that you can rearrange all steps in your project as you're adding new steps or editing existing ones without page refreshes.

This helps solve two issues.  First, you won't lose any information you enter about the step when you rearrange because the page doesn't refresh (oops, sorry if you experienced this before the update!).  Also, rearranging is much faster now since you don't have to wait for page refreshes!  

You can check out what the new interface looks like in the video above (or just try it out yourself in your own project!)

It feels good to update a feature when it's been bothering you for a long time. (:

As I mentioned in Village Integration: User Accounts & Projects, I designed an embed feature on The Computer Clubhouse Village to show a slideshow of images from a project.

I was never completely happy with this embedded BiP view, though, because I feel it doesn't represent the process as well as I would like.  In particular, I want to be able to show the process tree but haven't figured out a way to do it in such a small space.

I want to embed with a link to a specific element of my project.
By clicking on your question for this step, I saw the url structure necessary to take me directly to this step:
But when I tried to create a similar url for a direct link, without asking for advice, BiP failed to load the step (endlessly looping page loading indicator).

Thanks for reporting this issue - are you trying to send a direct link to a step in your project, or are you trying to create an embedded view that automatically shows a particular step?

Currently, the embed only works for the entire project (not a particular step). If you want to send a direct link to a step in your project, you can click on the step name to copy the direct link. Let me know if this answers your question!

I am trying to send a link to a colleague that takes him to a specific step (not embedding in the sense you asked for feedback but an essential collaboration function in my mind). But, when I clicked on the name, it did not update the url in the browser. When I right clicked, it took me to the root step. Only when I edited the step did it provide the correct step id as part of the editing url. Then I manually inserted the correct id into the earlier url step structure and it finally works. http://buildinprogress.media.mit.edu/projects/2307/steps?step=8762
Do you have a more appropriate location to conduct this kind of feedback?

If you click on the name of the step, it will copy the link to your clipboard, and you should be able to paste that link directly (it will not change the link in the browser address bar automatically). Sorry this was confusing!

I saw the help tip, 'copy link' when I pointed to the title but did not understand it as a 'copy link to clipboard' so that it is ready to paste. Now that I understand, it makes sense. Since some other websites automatically update the url in the browser, other users might fall into this trap, too. Would a tool tip rewording help?

In redesigning the embedded viewer, I wanted to be able to incorporate the process map in all views.  Ideally, the process map would repositioning itself automatically so the current step you're viewing images for is in the center.  However, to accomplish this, I knew it would take significantly more time to develop, so I decided to roll out a simpler version of the embedded viewer.  You can see a mockup of what this embedded viewer might look like above, though!

Now you can embed your Build in Progress projets on your own website!

You can access the embed code by clicking on the "share" link on your project page (the blue button next to the remix button).  Here, you can grab the embed code.

Fun side note: the biggest change to the new embedded BiP viewer is showing the entire process map preview.  I think this is especially helpful for getting a quick overview of the scale of a project.

I wanted to be able to capture a screenshot of a container on the project page, but it turned out this is not a straightforward thing to do – ultimately, though, I'd like for this condensed view of the process map to show up on other pages on the site.  As an example, if you hover over a project on the Projects page, you could get a quick peek into the structure of a project.

New features this week are all about sharing your projects outside of the Build in Progress community.  

You can now export your project by clicking the black ‘export’ button on the top of your project page. Clicking the export button will give you a zip file with all the contents of your project, including any text descriptions you’ve added, images, design files, and videos (we currently export uploaded videos but not embedded videos from YouTube or Vimeo).  Your exported project is organized into folders for each step that you created.

What can you use this for?  If you like posting about your projects on other sites, such as your own blog, you can easily grab all the images from your projects and have it all in once place.  This can also be useful if you are starting to build a paper portfolio and need all the documentation from your project page.

Whenever I finish a major feature, I like taking a break and working on some smaller elements of the site.  I made the following changes to project pages

  • I resized steps in the process map so you can see the image better (before, the text was always obscuring most of the image).  A tradeoff to this design decision is that the process map becomes longer to allow for more vertical space for each step. (see image above)
  • Slight changes to the type for step names and project names
  • Made images larger on the project page, particularly for steps with single images, whose image now stretches the width of the step container.

I would really appreciate your feedback on any design suggestions!

The Mystery Messages Challenge happened all the way back in June, but I thought it was important for me to share what went into creating this challenge and what I learned from the experience of hosting the second challenge.

After meeting with several coordinators regarding the first challenge, I learned that there were several issues with the first challenge:

  • the timing of the first challenge was not great (close to the holidays and to the end of the school marking period)
  • the length of the first challenge (2 weeks) was too short – if a clubhouse could only participate during the second week, then they only had one week to finish their projects.  this doesn't work very well for a drop-in model where the youth may only come once a week for a few hours.
  • coordinators expressed that they wanted more structure to the challenge.  
  • additionally, from my own end, I felt that my previous emails to coordinators were not ideal, as they were all text and probably were not read, so this time around, I wanted to make a better effort to send more visually readable emails.

To improve the challenge the second time around, I sent out a survey about a month before the challenge was launched, asking coordinators which launch date would work best for them (and which day of the week). Additionally, I asked how many members of their clubhouses they estimated might participate.

Six coordinators responded to the survey, and the most popular response was to launch the challenge the first week of June.  Based on this feedback, blamb and I went to create a series of support materials for the coordinators and promotional material for the challenge.

One of my colleagues at the Media Lab suggested that I make a poster that could be hung up in different clubhouses to advertise for the challenge.  I decided to put together the poster (above), which involved designing icons from scratch.

To let coordinators know about the poster, I created a page on the Clubhouse Village to promote the challenge and also emailed the poster directly to participating coordinators.  As I mentioned earlier, I was very conscious of sending more visual emails this time around, so I decided to use Mailchimp.  You can see an image of the promo email I sent to Clubhouses above.

For the challenge, I decided to split it up into smaller, 1-week segments around Brainstorming, Building, Extending, and Building

Brainstorming was primarily about conceptualizing multiple ideas for the challenge and sharing them on the site.

Building focused on creating a prototype and sharing it through video.  We also encouraged participants to leave feedback on one another's designs.

Extending involved incorporating feedback from other participants to extend the prototype you've already created.

Built was about sharing your final design and wrapping up.

The different milestones were outlined on the site, with links to any tutorials for completing any of the steps.

To be honest, participation was short and not sustained over the three weeks.  Most projects submitted were completed in a day, and the milestones generally seemed extraneous.

I sent a survey to coordinators after the challenge was finished to get a sense of what resources were used.  It turns out that the poster was only used by one coordinator, but the promotional video was used by everyone that responded.  Only one participant used the Coordinator guide.

In general, I got feedback from Coordinators that the scheduling was actually not good for their Clubhouses - many were switching between spring and summer programming, with a transition between members coming to their Clubhouses.  This was all despite sending a survey four weeks in advance to determine the date that worked best for everyone (and the participants did indicate that the date I selected worked for them).

Overall, I felt that despite the amount of effort put into putting together this challenge, including weekly Mailchimp emails, designing promotional material, and structuring the challenge into weekly milestones, the challenge was ultimately not particularly successful due to a mismatch in timing and engagement.  I wonder how the outcomes of the challenge would have differed with an audience that was interested and invested in participating in a challenge over several weeks rather than participating in one day – or is three weeks too long for a challenge?

Anyhow, given the results of this challenge, I decided that it's probably not worth investing the time into hosting another challenge.  However, if anyone has suggestions for how to improve the challenge for next time (or if other users of Build in Progress are particularly interested), please let me know!

The Collections page has gotten a bit of a facelift, with the following changes:

  • a "Latest Updates" feed to show recent changes to projects in the collection.
  • an image slideshow at the top of the page to help you discover the contents of projects in the collection
  • a unique URL for each collection page, so you can send a more readable URL to your friends

I'm also working on a feature to make collections private.  If you have a class or organization that wants to use Build in Progress, but you only want to share the projects with people in your organization, that's what this feature will be for.  More about this in the coming weeks...

For project pages with a lot of steps (like this one!), it's easy to lose your place in the process map.  I decided to try to experiment with having the process map automatically scroll to the current step as you scroll through the blog.  You can check it out on this project page (or see it in the video above).

I also finally fixed a bug with rearranging steps that had plagued many projects.  I'm very happy to finally be rid of that problem!  Hopefully you never noticed it, but for those who did experience this issue, it should now be fixed. (:

You can now set your projects to private if you prefer not to publish your project publicly on Build in Progress: http://buildinprogress.media.mit.edu/help#set_privacy

There are three project privacy settings:

  • Public: Your project will be shared with everyone on Build in Progress
  • Unlisted: Only user with a direct link to your project will be able to see the project.
  • Private: Only you can view your project

You can set the privacy settings for a project on the top of your project page.  

Note: By default, new projects are unlisted until they are given a title and at least one image.  At this point, your project will automatically be made public unless you specify otherwise.

If you are using the mobile applications, please update to the latest version, as you may not be able to view your projects otherwise with the new security settings!

A few details for those who are curious:

  • Because collections are publicly viewable on the site, you can add unlisted projects to collections, but you cannot add private projects to public collections.
  • Your profile page will show all of your projects (public, unlisted, and private) when you are logged in, but other users will only be able to view your public projects. You can see which projects are unlisted or private with our privacy icons.
  • Updates to unlisted projects will show up on the activity feed of users who are following you. Updates about private projects will not appear on anyone's activity feeds.

Thanks to everyone who filled out our Build in Progress survey last month!  Along with the survey responses, I wanted to share some of the information I've discovered about how Build in Progress has been used over the past year and a half – both in terms of how the site has grown but also some of my favorite compelling uses of the platform.

I also want to underscore that while I'm sharing some statistics about Build in Progress, the platform is a research project being developed by a very small team (mostly myself, with help from some awesome undergraduate students at MIT).  The goal of the project is to understand and support people documenting and sharing their design projects online.  I've done many workshops and challenges using Build in Progress, but it's been awesome to see other people discover and use the tool on their own!

All the statistics shared here are from looking at Build in Progress usage from May 22nd, 2013 to October 1st, 2014.  

Since the site went live last May, 787 people have registered for Build in Progress, with 691 confirmed users (who logged in at least once).  1360 projects have been created, with 580 published projects(projects that are titled and contain at least one image).  We've also had 1309 comments left on the site and have had hits from users all around the world, spanning 97 countries.

Areas for Improvement

While the number of comments has increased over time, only 15% of registered users of Build in Progress have left comments on projects.  Additionally, most of the comments have been left by myself and other members of the Build in Progress team.  I would love to get feedback on how to encourage more collaboration and feedback on Build in Progress projects!

  • 13 images / project
  • 356 words / project

A little more than a quarter of these projects (26%) have branches, with an average of 6 branches / project (see image above).  In the next branch, I'll describe some of my favorite uses of branches on Build in Progress.

The Elucidator-Kirito's Blade is an early example from blamb, created in October, 2013.  What I love about this project is, not only is it an awesome project, but it shows the power of getting feedback during the design process.

When blamb shared his "final" product, he shared an awesome video of a sword he made from scratch, embedded witih LEDs along the blade.  But some of us noticed that the sword was powered by an AC adapter, requiring it to be plugged into the wall.  Several comments were left on the project, suggesting powering the sword using batteries.

This led to a new branch in the project focusing on powering the sword wirelessly (and a long discussion on battery options).  After some experimentation with AA batteries, blamb eventually ended up with a sword powered by 2 9V batteries in series and was able to bring his battery-powered sword with him to Anime Boston!

The feedback left on the project encouraged blamb to continue to develop his project, even after his "final" product was shared.  This project was not about sharing an awesome final product, but being open to sharing the entire process!

In Tower Defense Game and Boxauddsbrandonyu11frankie77777,jackkolb, and noah.marty collaborated on developing a flash game to bring awareness to Global Warming.

In this project, branches were used to organize different areas of the project (software and hardware) as well as versioning and planning as the project developed over the course of several weeks.

What I love about this project is the use vivid use of language to capture both the accomplishments and struggles of designing a project.  Here are some of my favorite quotes from the project page:

"As for now, bottles of Martinelli's Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Cider are flying open, cheers being given, glasses clinked, and our under-aged group is rejoiced with the happiness and enthusiasm of a professional game development studio."

"Any help with any of these bugs will be GREATLY appreciated, and anyone who helps lead to their arrest will be duly compensated with a spot on the Credits section giving our many thanks, hugs, and kisses!"

"This internship, and project, has been one of the greatest experiences of my (and hopefully my group's) life. I am VERY proud of all the work we have done, all the things we have learned and the achievements we have strived for​"

These quotes share not only the process of developing the game, but the emotional rollercoaster that is design.  I also loved how many of the quotes included reflections on the game, including what could be improved and planning how to go about making those improvements.  This, for me, was the most entertaining project to read, and I really enjoyed seeing the project come to fruition.

At NYU, alexruthmann and his students have been using Build in Progress in his Music Education course.  The students collaborate on developing musical construction kits using household materials so that anyone can build their own instruments!

In the Musical Kit Project, students organized their own contributions into branches, sharing how they developed their construction kit as well as their reflections on the project as a whole.  This is one of the most thoroughly-documented projects on Build in Progress!

The Internet Monitored Sprinkler System project was created as part of an Arduino challenge held on the site in August, 2014.  During the challenge, makers were given an Arduino BLE board to prototype with over the course of three weeks.  Unfortunately, the board did not have much documentation, so no one that participated was able to figure out how to use it.  That didn't stop people from trying to help each other out, though!

In this project, stuart.a.rucker shared his entire process of trying to use the board as well as several other Bluetooth boards.  These different attempts are well-documented on his site through branches, where red and green labels indicate success and less-successful attempts.  He also left code embedded in different steps for other people to reuse – all in the spirit of helping others that were using the same board!

Remix: Soft Circuits is a very meta project – not only does it capture how youth in an after-school space create their own soft circuit bracelets, but it also documents the facilitators' role in creating workshops around these activities.  jnelson organizes the project into three different sections: practice (learning about the technology), project (creating the actual soft circuit bracelets), and reflections (with quotes from the youth about the activity).

Within each branch is a step for each day of the workshop, which captures (with beautiful images!) what was being created each day.  

This project shows how Build in Progress can be used to document activities around making, and not just the making itself.  It opened my eyes to the possibility of educators using the tool to share how they facilitate activities in their spaces!

Thanks to all 22 users who responded to our Build in Progress survey!

The survey respondents ranged in age from 15-51 years old, with an average age of 28 years.  People who responded also had an average of 3 projects on Build in Progress.  

What stood out to me about the survey results was that the process of stopping to document remains a critical problem for people who want to share their projects.  Most people agreed that stopping to document is distracting and difficult to do, both in terms of remembering to do it but also physically doing it when your hands are occupied.  Surprisingly, though, the responses seemed pretty split about whether documentation took too much time, which suggests to me that perhaps documentation doesn't take too much time but is actually just hard to do because of other reasons.  

If you're interested in all of the results of the survey, I've attached a PDF summary from Google Drive.  Also, some of the features I highlighted in the survey are now implemented, such as embedding and exporting projects, so please check those out if you were interested in using them!

Project pages have been updated!

  • The Process Map gets shown full screen when you open up a project page 

This was to help others, at a glance, get a sense of the scope of the project and not to overwhelm with too much information at once (including both the Process Map and the blog).

  • The Project Banner is updated

Before, it was difficult to see the images at the top of the project page because it was stretched and also hidden by text (the project description and title), so I separated the text and the images.  This was inspired by recent changes to the Collections pages.

A long-requested feature is finally implemented – You can now insert code snippets into your Build in Progress steps.

To do so, click on the "Insert Code Snippet" button on the editor toolbar and paste the code you'd like to include.  You can see an example below:

The Gallery mode has officially launched!  This new viewing mode features all the images and videos from your project.

On the bottom left of any project page, you'll find a link to view a project in the "Gallery" mode. 

Some things to check out:

  • When you hover over an image, all other images from the same step are highlighted, and information about the step is show on the right
  • If your project has labels, they will automatically appear on the left-hand side and will work as filters to highlight branches in your project.
  • When you hover over an image or video, a download link will appear in the top right-hand corner of the image, which lets you directly download the selected image.

In addition to the Gallery mode, you can now view your projects in "Blog" mode.  Blog mode is formatted for reading through entire projects.  You can enter the blog mode by clicking the blog mode button at the bottom of a project page.

WIthin the blog mode, you can click tags to highlight steps that fall within a particular branch.  This makes it easier to identify related steps.

Feedback: When the number of steps and categories is relatively small, the layout that grows the list of steps downward and the list of labels upward works reasonably. But in this BiP Website project (103), the two lists overlap and make it difficult to both read and control. Since you explain blog mode in a project that has a very large number of steps and labels, it's a confusing introduction to Blog Mode. I only understood the issue after I looked at Blog Mode for my much smaller project: http://buildinprogress.media.mit.edu/projects/2307/blog

I have been working on a new project page for Build in Progress, designed to make the Map mode more space efficient.  It hasn't been launched yet, but you can preview it by appending "index_2" to any project page URL (for example http://buildinprogress.media.mit.edu/projects/2240/steps/index_2)

Note: The link above no longer works!  The new project page is now the default view. (3/24/2015)

I'd love to get your feedback.  One of the biggest changes is the panning interface, that enables the Process Map to span across the entire page.  Additionally, instead of viewing all posts, you view one step at a time.

I plan to finish this interface within the next 2 weeks.  If you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to leave them on this step.

It's been a long time in the making, but I've finally finished the brand new Project Page!  

The new project page was designed to be more space efficient with a full screen Process Map and easier navigation.  Before, the information on the right side of the page ("step description") competed with the Process Map, and there were one too many scrollable elements on the page.  I tried to minimize this scrolling in the new project page and really forefront the Process Map.

Originally, I got rid of scrolling altogether by implementing a panning interface (which you can check out here), but after testing it with others, people preferred scrolling for a few reasons:

  1. Scrolling is easier with laptop trackpads and requires less effort than clicking to pan
  2. Scrollbars give you a sense of how large the process map is overall

After this feedback, I ended up reimplementing a full-screen, scrolling process map.  

Also, with the new blog mode, it no longer seemed necessary to have all of the step information visible, so with the new project page, you can focus on individual steps at a time.

Some things you can try with the new project page:

  1. You can minimize the step information on the right of the page to view the process map full screen.
  2. Clicking on the arrow navigation on the right-hand side will go through the steps in chronological order - clicking the back button will show you the last step updated in the project
  3. If a project has comments, you can view a list of comments in the Project Overview - when you hover over each comment, the Process Map will highlight the step that contains the comment.
  4. To go back to editing any information about the project, you can click on the project name in the Process Map.

I hope you enjoy the new interface - as always, if you have any feedback, feel free to leave it below.  I’ve also included a video of the original interface so you can compare the different interfaces - I’m trying to get better at documenting how this website evolves over time and felt video was better for capturing that than images. A recent request I received was to have private collections.  More specifically, teachers wanted a way to manage class / workshop projects in a way that was visible to only to students / workshop attendees.

Luckily, since I had already implemented project privacy settings, this was pretty straightforward to implement.  I'll write more about this soon.  But in the process of implementing the collections privacy features, I also wanted to update a few other things about the collection page, including the explore page (which you view when you click Collections in the navbar).

I wanted to convey the following in the new explore page:

  • Multiple projects - I tried to show a preview of a few different projects in the collection
  • Description - The description can be helpful, especially for collection titles that include a course number that is identifiable to people in the class but not to anyone outside of it.

The processing of implementing this new collections page involved accounting for collections that have avatars and those that do not.  I tested this on my local server, which you can see in the image above.  With just a few collections, I thought it looked fine.  But then when I pushed the code to the server, I found the new collections explore page to be too cluttered.

The lesson I learned from this is that things can look really different in multitudes - because of this, I've reverted to the old collections explore page.  Don't worry, though - I did update a lot of things about the Collection page, which I'll write about next!

You can now adjust privacy settings for collections on Build in Progress!  There are three possible options:

  • Public - this is the default and will make your collection easy to find for anyone visiting the site.
  • Unlisted - your collection will not appear in the explore page (buildinprogress.media.mit.edu/collections), but anyone that has a link can view it.
  • Private - your collection will only be visible to you or authors of any projects you have in the collection.  

Private collections are designed for classes that want to have a private space for everyone in the class to share their projects.  If you add a project to a private collection, the person who created the project will be able to view it (but will need a link!)

Additionally, I updated the Collection page to make it easier to update information about the collection, including the avatar, collection name, and description - all editable without rereshing the page.

To help people get started with using Build in Progress, we created a tutorial that walks you through creating your first project.  

The goal of the tutorial was to help introduce features of the Build in Progress project page while also communicating some of the values of the tool (such as sharing process over product and stories, not instructions).

You can see a full video of the tutorial above!  This tutorial only appears for users creating their first project, and you can exit the tutorial at any time.

You can now register for Build in Progress using your Google Account!  To do so, just click the SIgn Up link on the top right of the project page and follow, approve the app via Google, and viola – your new account is ready to use!  

I hope this will make it easier for schools who are already using Google App accounts.

Will this feature also be added to the iOS app as well? We'd love to be able to use Build in Progress with our iPads at school but can't because there is no Google log in option in the app.

Thanks for the request! For now, if students that registered with Google on the site want to use the app, they can add a password to their account under Account Settings (on the website). With the password, they can then log into the iOS app.

I'll look into adding this feature on mobile!

One tool I've always want to build into Build in Progress is a way to see how Process Maps (the tree on the left side of the page) grow as projects are updated.  For example, is it more common for labels or branches to be added throughout a project, or are they used for organizing a project after it's been completed?  There are also sometimes issues when people rearrange branches for large projects, and I'd like to debug that better – being able to see the changes made to the project overtime would help with this.

To address these issues, I've started working on a logging tool in which updates to a project are logged over time in a way that makes it possible for me to reconstruct how the process map changes.  My current implementation involves creating a JSON file for each project and updating it each time a new step is added or deleted or when steps are rearranged.  Since I haven't previously logged how process maps have changed over time, the log viewer (which I'm calling 'timemachine') will only be viewable for new projects created after logging is introduced.

I then built a log viewer that takes the JSON data and reconstructs the process map at different stages of the project.  You can check out some early iterations in the video above.  I'd like to add some indication of time, such as the length of time between updates to a project relative to the total amount of time the project has been constructed for.  I'm currently using chart.js to create the doughnut chart you can see in the video, where the green segment indicates the amount of time between the newest log and the previous log, and the orange segment indicates all of the time before the second to last log.  

This is currently only implemented on the test server for Build in Progress, but I'm hoping to launch it sometime in the next few weeks.  At first, only researchers on the project will be able to view the logs, but I think it will be interesting for authors to be able to see their own logs too, so I plan to open up the timemachine interface to authors too.

After sharing my logging prototype with @chrisg, I made a few modifications to the timemachine interface.  The biggest change is the addition of a calendar, which you can use to navigate the updates to your project.  I built the calendar off of kalendar (but ended up writing a lot of my own javascript functions for integrating the calendar with the process map).

I just launched the logging tool today, so all projects created from today on will be viewable in the timemachine interface.  This interface will be open to researchers on the project (myself) and to project authors (which means you can only view the timemachine logs for your own projects).  I'm interested to see what this reveals about how people modify their projects over time.  If you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear!

For some time, there has been a bug with rearranging steps that I've been chasing down but had been unable to fully resolve.  The most difficult part about trying to fix it was that the error only seemed to occur on the live site, and I wasn't able to consistently replicate it locally.  Some of you may have experienced this bug yourself (and I'm sorry if you did!) – it especially affected projects with a lot of steps.  What would happen is that after rearranging steps in the Process Map, some of the steps would not appear on the project page on refresh.  The steps weren't deleted, but the relationship between the steps, stored in the database, would be incorrect, causing issues with rendering the Process Map.  If you opened up the project in an alternative viewing mode, like the blog mode, all of the information would still be there.

So what went wrong?  I decided to spend a day to really think through what might be happening.  When I looked into my Heroku logs (the service hosting this site), I discovered H27 errors, indicating that the client request was interrupted (for example, the browser window may have been redirected in the middle of a request). Looking back into the logic for saving the structure of the Process Map, I discovered code I had written over 2 years ago, which would iteratively loop through every step of a project and update each individually.  This would happen in a javascript function whenever steps were rearranged.  

What I believe would happen is that the app may be in the middle of this loop when the user redirects the browser window to a new page (either to a new page on Build in Progress or elsewhere).  This is not good, as some steps in the project would be correctly saved, and others would not have been.  

So I decided to completely rewrite how the Process Map is saved on reordering.  Rather than iteratively loop through every step and send an AJAX request for each one, I store the entire Process Map structure in one array that gets sent in a single request.  Then, in the Rails controller, I save each step.  Since the data is passed to the Rails app in one go, rather than for each individually step, I believe this should resolve the problems with rearranging projects.

It was interesting for me to go back and review code I had written two years ago.  When I first started Build in Progress, I was really new to javascript, so I was glad to have the chance to make the code much simpler and cleaner.  Thanks to everyone who reported problems with their projects, and please continue to report any issues you find through our Contact form.

As more and more projects get updated on Build in Progress each day, I wanted a way for the homepage to reflect how BiP projects are generally in progress, rather than completed work.  How could the homepage show how project pages are dynamic and constantly changing as projects evolve?

After searching the web for a few examples of live feeds, I decided to replace the original grid of thumbnail images with a feed showing when the projects were updated and what the most recent changes are.  The goal with this design is to give users a preview of what the project contains, and also to convey that BiP projects are works-in-progress.  I've included before and after images and videos above for reference!

I would love to hear if you have any feedback or suggestions on the homepage, as I will likely apply some of the changes to the project page as well, and even to user profile pages.

Today, I'm launching a new feature called Pins that lets you annotate different steps in your process map.

There are currently 8 different pins you can pick from, which I selected to cover a range of emotions.  They are selected from the Font Awesome Library, so if you have suggestions for others you'd like to see, let me know!

When you add a pin to a step, it will appear in the top right corner of the step in the process map.  Try it out to bring attention to different steps in your project.

Recently, we've been using Build in Progress in a class at the Media Lab and have a collection of projects that is visible here.  The feedback from the students so far has been really helpful for thinking through some of the design of BiP.  For example, the new Pins feature was sparked by a conversation with a student who suggested making it easier to draw attention to steps you want people to pay attention to.

I personally have found myself going to the homepage to discover recently changed projects and questions that may have been asked.  In the process, I realized that this information should probably be more accessible within the Collection page itself.  In fact, more generally, I think the Collections feature should be renamed to something like "Organizations" since they are predominantly used for groups like classes or workshops.  While ideally I would hope people would explore questions shared by the larger BiP community (which are viewable on the homepage), I recognize that questions asked by peers in the same organization are probably of higher priority.

With this idea, I did a refresh of the Collection page to highlight open questions.  I got rid of the image slideshow, which I had designed as a discovery tool to stumble across interesting images from projects but was too awkwardly sized to see much useful information.  

I also designed the project thumbnails so that if you hover over the project, you'll get a quick peek into the latest update to the project.

Hopefully this will help with finding recent updates and questions within a collection.  The next step is to re-think what the "organization" experience should be like.  For example, you should probably be able to join an organization without having a project in it.  But for now, I will stop procrastinating with my dissertation and return to this after my defense.

After a mishap where a student accidentally deleted several weeks worth of work by deleting her project, I decided to make it a bit more difficult to delete projects.

Now, when you try to delete a project on a project page, you must enter in the title of the project to confirm you want to delete it (image above).

Once you delete, there's no going back... (:

After 3.5 years of development and 2,000+ shared projects on everything from 3D printed chess pieces to unicycle mechanics tocrowdfunding a virtual reality tour of an interactive media lab,Build in Progress is going on indefinite hiatus.

Effective Monday, September 19th, it will no longer be possible to create new content on Build in Progress. Instead, over the next weeks, an open-source version of Build in Progress will be shared so that anyone can build their own project-sharing platform from the source.The entire site will also be archived so that you’ll still be able to access any projects you’ve already created on Build in Progress.
