Operation Prototype for Week 1

We plan on trying to replicate the game's sensing feature. We'll have a cavity where the user can try to extract a piece with tweezers without touching the sides. If they touch the sides either a light or a sound will play.

We attempted to use the photocell as a proximity sensor to turn on an LED if the user placed the tweezers too close to the cavity walls. We determined that the photocell was not very responsive and would not be the best sensor option for this project.

To build our prototype to present to the class, we rastered the image of the "patient" onto foam core with the laser cutter and cut out the body cavity/ broken heart with the laser cutter as well. 

We cut the bottom and sides of the box by hand since they were simple shapes and did not require the use of a laser cutter. 

We had to make the box about two inches deep to house our electronics; however, this made the cavity the user would fetch the broken heart out of too deep. We remedied this by building a platform of foam core as can be seen in the pictures to make the body cavity less deep. 

By covering the cavity completely with foil, we were able to ensure that the tweezers would connect to the electrical components if the user hit the sides of the cavity. 

The tweezers were easily connected to the electrical system by wrapping wire securely around them. 

The final result of our efforts was a complete system which functioned as expected with little bugs or problems. The final game prototype looked quite clean and well built as well as a good starting point for a first design iteration.

We decided to use a foil switch in which the user's tweezers would close a circuit when in contact with the cavity walls and thus light up an LED and make a speaker buzz. Our steps in developing our final circuit/ code were as follows

  • wire up our circuit to make sure the foil switch could light up the LED
  • incorporate a speaker to buzz when the LED was lit
  • program Arduino to count the number of times the circuit closed (cavity walls are touched)
  • program Arduino such that the buzzer continuously buzzes and the LED stays lit once the user touches the walls five times
  • the above bullet point signals to the user that he/she has lost and the user must press the reset button to start again

  • What would you change if you could build Version 2.0 of your design?

    Our electronics started acting up the last day of the project, so if we had more time I’m sure we could have fixed that. 

    We could also make our game a little more visually appealing, although that doesn’t seem like something we should focus when rapid prototyping.

    Finally, we could have made our project even more like the actual game of Operation with more cavities and I think that wouldn’t have been to hard to implement in a Version 2.0.

  • What skills did you contribute to the team project?

    Mostly enthusiasm. I traced the heart, and helped out with a bunch of things like building/cutting whenever I could.

  • What skills would you like to develop or learn for the final project (interactive living)?

    I feel like electronics was a major part of this project and probably something I’d like to learn about just in general. If our final project is electronics-heavy I’d like to be able to contribute more to that piece.

  • What would you change if you could build Version 2.0 of your design?

    Our integration of electronic parts and mechanical components could use some improvement.  Our design of mechanical components didn't account well for how components that were highly linked to the electrical components (LED light, push button) would interface with the user.
  • What skills did you contribute to the team project?

    I did a reasonable portion of the CAD work, and attempted to provide organization and direction to the project. 

  • What skills would you like to develop or learn for the final project (interactive living)?

    Electrical engineering was a large portion of the functionality of this project, and a subject that I have only a basic knowledge of.  I'd like to have a more thorough understanding of Arduino functionality and creation of circuits in general.

What could you change if you could build version 2.0 of your design?

  • If I could build version 2.0 of this design, I would focus more on making the housing and mechanical components of the game more like a well developed product rather than a simple prototype or proof of concept. It would be nice to have had a 3D printed heart and have used acrylic instead of foam core. When constructing our mechanical design, we also did not take into account the integration of our electrical system. In a second version, it would be necessary to better fit our electronics in the housing as well as develop a more permanent soldered circuit rather than simply taping a breadboard inside our game. While assembling our game, the electrical connections did move around and cause some problems so making more secure, permanent connections would be required for our second version. 

What skills did you contribute to the team project?

  • I designed, tested, and assembled the circuitry for the project and programmed the Arduino as well. In addition to this, I helped with the final fabrication and integration of the components for our game. 

What skills would you like to develop or learn for the final project (interactive living)?

  • I would like to perhaps get more involved in mechanical design and 3D modeling as well as digital fabrication, while staying involved in electrical systems as well. By spending time working on both, I think I might be able to improve my ability to interface mechanical and electrical systems together.

After learning how to use the "Fritzing" application in class today, this breadboard schematic was made to more clearly show how the circuitry of Operation worked. The foil switch with tweezers in the actual operation is represented as a simple switch in the schematic.
