Initial Ideation [Jan 15th, 2014]

social projects:

  • bracelets with common interest detector

  • color necklace/bracelet that lights different colors depending on quality of conversation

  • expressing interest through buzz

  • long distance relationship sensing through vibrating motors

  • eye contact - sends info

  • cup holder with RFID and bluetooth so contact info is passed through clinking of glasses

sensing projects:

  • sound visor on face that beeps according to where the sound is, mics on belt corresponds to vibration motors on forehead/visor

  • ultrasonic sensors on feet - advancing the walking stick, scanning with feet/hands

  • heating gloves to equilibrize the outside environment and inner temperature

  • eyes on your hands, ears on hands, echolocation for deafs

which led to:

  • Foot Controlled Arm: third arm controlled by feet through pressure pads on shoe soles

  • Medusa Eyes: three camera along the ears/head that would enhance your vision through night vision, thermal vision and facial recognition. User would also wear visor with LCD that displays the name of people, the temperature, etc.

  • Swarm Bracelet: beaded bracelet that has sensors that corresponds to each bead that goes out into the environment and collects info, then returns to give user real-time info!

We decided to go with the idea of using your shoes as an interface.  More specifically using pressure pads in the sole of your shoe to control a robotic arm.  Specific applications are still in the works but it could be helpful for amputees, or regular people who just want an extra set of hands.

We prototyped the functionality using a servo arm and four pressure pads.  The servo arm had to joints and two links.  Two pressure pads controlled the forward and reverse motion of each joint respectively.

Next step is to try it in a shoe!

any ideas where the robotic arm will be mounted on the person?

Probably shoulder or back. Still in development

Put pressure sensors on foot pads.  Tried to control system with feet.   Moderate success.

edit: added video

could you share a video of the prototype here?

Using MATLAB we were able to control the arduino and do more heavy duty number crunching.

the finishing on the black base is quite nice! what did you cover the foam in (the white primer layer)?

Cynthia mounted the arm on a breastbone cast.  Now the arm comes out of the chest.

Nicely done!
I'd love to see this thing in action!
